My wife and I (and a few friends from work) went to see Paul McCartney last night at Yankee Stadium. He played a great mix of songs from various eras, mostly Beatles some from Wings and some solo stuff. Unfortunately, he did not do Hello Goodbye as that is what inspired the name of this site. But everything he did do he did well.

Paul McCartney Yankee Stadium July 2011

For a 69 year old dude, he can still sing. Sure, his voice isn’t as pristine as it was when he was younger but oddly his voice seemed to have gotten better as the show progressed. Although, he didn’t sound completely like his younger voice, and he doesn’t do the McCartney screeches the way he used to, all-in-all it was pretty close.

Towards the end of the show he brought out a guest musician, none other than the venerable Billy Joel. I had heard from the rock radio station that Billy might be performing with him. He only did one song (I Saw Her Standing There) but the crowd went wild. I think everyone was expecting New York State of Mind but it didn’t happen. Oh well!

I sang along with just about every song and there were some songs that I have forgotten the words to because I hadn’t heard them in a very long time. But the teleprompter helped (sort of) and the delay wasn’t altogether terrible but it wasn’t anticipatory either. Sir Paul even made a joke about how it was lucky to have the teleprompter as there were too many lyrics to remember.

As he is approaching 70 it’s hard to imagine that he will continue with touring for that much longer. Having said that, he shows no sign of letting up anytime soon. Still, I’m glad I got to see him one last time before the eventual day that he announces his retirement.
